Year 2025-26
Welcome to the Year 1 class page for the year 2025-26. We will update this page regularly with pictures, showcasing what the children have been doing.
Below are the curriculum letters for the year so you can see what you can be doing to help your child through that half term.
Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday, so please make your child comes to school in their PE kit. On Monday and Thursday, we will be changing reading books. Please make sure you sign and date every time your child reads, in their reading record, otherwise their book will not get changed. Reading is super important for the children and will help with their phonics, so please have an adult listen to your child read whenever possible.
Thank you!
World Book Day 2026
Year 1 had a wonderful time celebrating World Book Day! 📚✨ This year was extra special as we celebrated 100 years of Winnie the Pooh 🐻🍯. Both the children and adults came to school dressed as their favourite storybook characters, filling the classrooms with colourful costumes and lots of excitement 🎭👑. In class, we also worked together to create a special school legacy. Each child wrote about what they would like to be remembered for in the future 🌟✏️. It was a lovely way to celebrate our love of books while thinking about the positive mark we can leave on our school community. Take a look at some of our amazing outfits...
Roundhay Park- Sculpture Trail
As part of our exciting launch day for our new theme Map it Out!, we visited Roundhay Park for a fun and active school trip. We explored the sculpture trail, using maps to guide our way and carefully following different routes around the park. Along the journey, we practised identifying human features, such as paths, bridges and statues, as well as physical features like lakes, hills and wooded areas. It was a fantastic opportunity to develop our map-reading skills in a real environment while enjoying the beautiful surroundings. The trip helped us understand how maps help us explore and learn about the world around us.
Welcome to Spring 2 – Map it Out! 🗺️🌿
This term, our main theme is geography, where the children will explore maps and learn about human and physical features in both Yorkshire and Africa. As part of our learning, we will go on an exciting trip to Roundhay Park 🌳 to explore the sculpture trail. We also have lots of other fun activities planned, including making a fruit salad 🍎🍌 in DT as part of our food technology topic, and creating colourful art inspired by Wassily Kandinsky 🎨🌀. It’s going to be a term full of discovery, creativity, and hands-on learning!
🏰 Year 1’s Launch Day for Spring 1 🏰
Year 1 had an exciting launch day to kick off their new theme, “The World of Make Believe” 🏰✨, where they will be exploring fairy tales and traditional tales. To celebrate, the children came dressed as their favourite fairy tale characters 🧚♀️🦸♂️ and made crowns 👑 to become princes and princesses for the day. A highlight of the morning was making and tasting porridge from Goldilocks 🥣🍯, which the children loved trying! The day was filled with creativity, fun, and imagination, setting the perfect start to their magical learning adventure.
Welcome to Spring 1 in Year 1!
This half term our theme is The World of Make Believe, where we will be stepping into a magical world full of imagination, adventure and wonder. The children will be exploring a range of traditional tales such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and The Three Little Pigs, using stories to inspire our learning across the curriculum.
To launch our topic, we will be hosting a Fairy-Tale Afternoon. The children will enjoy making porridge inspired by Goldilocks and the Three Bears, creating crowns for princes and princesses, and designing magical wands for fairies and wizards.
At the end of the half term, we will celebrate with a Teddy Bears’ Picnic. Children will be invited to bring a teddy bear from home, make picnic food, and enjoy a special picnic together. Adults will be invited into school to join us for this lovely celebration afternoon- more information will be given nearer the time.
We have lots of magical and exciting experiences planned this half term and can’t wait to share our journey through the world of make believe with you! ✨📖🧸
Thackray Museum!
Our Year 1 children went on a trip to Thackray Museum. The children were introduced into Victorian life with a workshop. We explored different items from the Victorian era. Afterwards, the children were able to dress up in Victorian clothing, before exploring the old Victorian street!
✨ Victorian Day in Year 1! ✨
Our Year 1 children stepped back in time to experience what life was like in Victorian times. Dressed in fantastic costumes, they discovered how strict Victorian schools were, made their own dunce’s hats, tried some beautiful Victorian handwriting, and even created traditional cup-and-ball toys! Everyone looked amazing and had so much fun learning about the past. 🕰️📜🎩
🍂 Autumn 2 – Leeds Under the Microscope
This half term, our topic “Leeds Under the Microscope” will take us on a fascinating journey through time! The children will be discovering what life was like in Victorian Leeds, exploring how the city has changed and developed into the vibrant place we know today. We’ll compare Victorian Leeds to modern-day Leeds, learning about the differences in work, transport, homes, and daily life.
As part of our history learning, we’ll find out all about Queen Victoria and her incredible reign, gaining an understanding of how she shaped Britain during this important period. To bring our learning to life, we’re also looking forward to an exciting trip to the Thackray Medical Museum, where the children will take part in an amazing Victorian workshop—a real chance to step back in time!
In the run-up to Christmas, we have some fun, creative activities planned, including rehearsals and performances for our class nativity. It promises to be a busy and exciting half term, full of discovery, creativity, and festive cheer!
🐾 Year 1 – Meet a Creature! 🐾
Year 1 had a very exciting visitor this week – Meet a Creature! The children had the chance to see, touch and even handle some incredible animals, including:
🦎 Leopard geckos
🐹 Guinea pigs
🌿 Stick insects
🐌 Giant snails
🐍 A corn snake & a python
🐉 A bearded dragon
🐢 A tortoise
🦂 A scorpion
🐭 A chinchilla
The session was full of fascinating facts, and the children learnt all about different animal groups and classifications. It was a wonderful opportunity to get hands-on and up close with some creatures they might never have seen before.
📸 Make sure to keep an eye out for the photos – especially the ones of a very brave (but slightly scared!) Mrs Harling holding the python!
What an unforgettable day for Year 1! 🐍
